Fashion Forward: How #Sustainability is the New Black at SDG Media Zone UN

1. "Patricia, you recently participated in a discussion at the SDG Media Zone focused on sustainability in fashion. What were some of the key insights or takeaways from that conversation?"

P: It was such an eye-opener! One big takeaway was that sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a necessity. We talked a lot about how brands need to be more transparent about their practices, from how they source materials to how they treat their workers. It’s not just about being ‘green’—it’s about being honest and responsible. Plus, there’s a real push for innovation, which makes it an exciting time to be in fashion.

2. "You had the chance to share the stage with industry leaders like Wendy Waugh, Sharon Pérez Arevalo, and Boris Mercier. How did their perspectives complement or challenge your views on sustainable fashion?"

P: Oh, it was amazing! Wendy brought up the importance of circular fashion, which got me thinking about how we can extend the life of clothes. Sharon highlighted social sustainability, like fair wages and safe working conditions. And Boris shared insights on new materials that are more eco-friendly. They each brought different angles to the table, and it made me realize that sustainability is so multi-layered. It’s not just about the planet; it’s also about the people.

3. "The fashion industry has been under scrutiny for its environmental impact. In your opinion, what are the most urgent steps brands need to take to become more sustainable?"

P: I think the first step is to slow down. Fast fashion is fast for a reason, and it’s not always pretty. Brands need to focus on quality over quantity, making clothes that last longer and using materials that don’t harm the environment. Also, they need to be transparent—if you're doing something good, show it; if you're not, own it and make a plan to improve.

4. "You mentioned the importance of innovation in fashion. Could you share some examples of innovative practices or technologies that are helping to drive sustainability in the industry?"

P: Definitely! One of my favorites is fabric recycling—turning old clothes into new materials so nothing goes to waste. Another cool one is lab-grown leather. It looks and feels like the real thing but without the environmental damage. Plus, there’s a lot happening with dyeing techniques that use less water and no harmful chemicals. It’s all about finding smarter ways to make clothes.

5. "How can events like the SDG Media Zone and platforms like the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network contribute to global efforts towards a more sustainable fashion future?"

P: These events are so important because they bring people together to share ideas and solutions. It’s a space where brands, designers, and consumers can learn from each other and see what’s possible. Plus, it pushes the conversation forward. The more we talk about sustainability, the more pressure there is on brands to step up and make real changes.
